Besides offering zero waste lifestyle products, what other environmentally-conscious activities do you practice?
Environmental sustainability and responsibility is at the very core of A Drop in the Ocean. With each and every purchase, 10 trees are planted across the globe, building capacity and access in developing communities. Further, at least one percent of all annual sales are donated to nonprofits working in the field to reduce human environmental impacts.
What are the “Ethical Guarantees” you list on your products, and what do they mean?
B Corp. Any products marked with “B Corp” indicates that the company the product is sourced from is a certified B Corporation. The B Corp website explains what this means much better than I ever could: “Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose….The B Corp community works toward reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities, and the creation of more high quality jobs with dignity and purpose.”
Cruelty-free. Any products listed as cruelty-free are Leaping Bunny Certified by Cruelty Free International. Per Cruelty Free International, this is the “only internationally recognised certification that requires a supplier monitoring system to be implemented by the brand, supply chain checking for animal testing right down to ingredient manufacturer level, adherence to a fixed cut-off date policy and acceptance of ongoing independent audits to ensure compliance.”
Fair Trade. Any products listed as fair trade carry the Fair Trade Certification. This certification ensures that the people making the product “work in safe conditions, protect the environment, build sustainable livelihoods, and earn additional money to empower and uplift their communities.”
Give-back Program / Advocacy. This ethical guarantee indicates that the company the product is sourced from has some kind of give-back or advocacy program. This may be in the form of 1% for the Planet membership, volunteer hours, or other program that works to benefit the environment, wildlife, and/or people. This is in addition to our give-back programs here at A Drop in the Ocean.
Made in the USA. Any products marked as made in the USA are exactly that - made in the USA.
Organic. Any products listed as organic are certified by the United States Department of Agriculture as such. Per the USDA, “organic operations must demonstrate that they are protecting natural resources, conserving biodiversity, and using only approved substances.”
Palm Oil-free. Any products marked as palm oil-free do not contain any palm oil in their products.
Sustainably-sourced Palm Oil. Any products marked as containing sustainably-sourced palm oil do contain palm oil, but from sustainable sources. See below for more information about sustainable palm oil.
Vegan. Any products marked as vegan are 100% free of any animal products.
Washington Local. Any products listed as Washington local are sourced from companies based in Washington state.
Do you ship plastic free?
Yes, always. We reuse boxes and packaging materials whenever possible, so your box may have some other logos on it besides our own. Our boxes are sealed with paper tape rather than plastic, and our labels are made with 100% post-consumer recycled paper.
How do you package my raw materials if I order multiples of the same item?
Most of our raw materials are sold per 2 ounces, and shipped in a glass jar (there are a couple exceptions to this). If, for example, you ordered (2) 2-oz jars of a product, unless otherwise specified, we will condense your order into one jar that holds 4 ounces. In short, the product will be condensed into the fewest number of containers possible.
If you would prefer your order to packaged in the original size containers, please leave a note during the checkout process.
Why do some of your products contain palm oil?
There’s a lot of news surrounding palm oil, and rightfully so. Palm oil is in nearly every product on store shelves today, and since oil palm requires a rainforest climate to grow, these habitats are being destroyed and species such as orangutans and tigers are losing their homes at an alarming rate.
You will never find a product in this store containing non-sustainably sourced palm oil.
Some of our products do, however, contain sustainably-sourced palm oil. Palm oil is a highly efficient crop. If we stopped purchasing palm oil completely, these plantations would be transitioned to another vegetable oil, which would supply lower yields and may actually lead to more forest destruction.
We understand that some of our EcoWarriors will not purchase products containing any palm oil. We also understand that some of the regulations around sustainably-sourced palm oil can be controversial. For these reasons, we will always clearly specify which products contain sustainably-sourced palm oil and which do not contain any.
