We're a zero waste store... Why do we have a retreat?

Our annual Baja EcoWarrior Retreat is happening again this September and I honestly gotta say, no matter how many times we visit the Vermilion Sea Field Station, it never gets less exciting.

Every time I sit down to write these emails to you or create a video of what it'll be like for Instagram, I can feel this buzzing inside me. It's powerful. And it doesn't stop when we hop in the vans in San Diego to make our way to Bahia de los Angeles. It's a constant, exciting, invigorating, inspiring feeling that I want you to experience, too.

But... every year I get the same question...

"You're a retail store, why do you have a retreat?" 🤔

So let's talk about it!

Our Baja EcoWarrior Retreat was something I envisioned for this shop from the very beginning (and TBH even before then). A Drop in the Ocean has always been about so much more than zero waste.

Our vision is a sustainable future for all living things, and one of my favorite ways to work towards this future is with our annual Baja EcoWarrior Retreat.

Because one of the best ways we can protect our planet is by simply talking about it with others.

It's so important to have conversations about our roles, what's actually happening, and how we can help. And finding that community of like-minded people is huge for our own advocacy too.

We will have these conversations on our retreat.

And getting out in nature is hugely important for conservation work.

We need to engage with nature to love it.
We need to find "heart knowledge" before we can find "head knowledge."

We will find our heart knowledge on this retreat.

I love this phrase from our friend and yoga leader, Erica. We have to care for ourselves in order to care for each other.

Because it's not just a random organization we found on the internet. There's a deep connection to this place, this organization, and this work.

We will be part of that work on this retreat.

So, you see, my friend, there are so many reasons we host a retreat in Mexico each summer, even though on the surface we're "just" a zero waste store.

It's all connected, and I want to share that connection with this community.
