The first batch of our new reef-safe sunscreen sold out much faster than anticipated! (Thank you!!) We've got more on the way, so if you want first dibs when it's back, be sure to order yours now and we'll ship it as soon as we get them back in-hand.
Go ahead - soak up some oh-so-needed Vitamin D 🌞 Our all-natural, waterproof, reef-safe tinted sunscreen has your back (and your shoulders, neck, face, legs, hands, and feet).
Made with food-safe, antioxidant-packed ingredients and non-nano zinc oxide, you’ll feel good about what you’re rubbing into your skin and what’s going into our waterways. A little goes a long way, and the absolutely ~dreamy~ consistency will have you actually looking forward to putting on your sunscreen. Plus, the “neutral tan” tint blends in beautifully with a full spectrum of skin tones, so you can finally say goodbye to the ghastly white cast of yester-sunscreens. And, of course, the aluminum and bamboo packaging makes this ocean-safe sunscreen one of the best low-waste sunscreens out there.

Size
Each bamboo tin contains 2 ounces of reef-safe sunscreen. The canister itself measures ~2.5” in diameter and 1.4” tall.
Ingredients
Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, Cocoa Butter (organic), Coconut Oil (organic), Jojoba Oil (organic), Avocado Oil, Beeswax, Beeswax Derivative, Mango Butter, Vitamin E, Natural Iron Oxide Pigment
Zinc oxide offers broad-spectrum protection against damaging UVA and UVB rays, and is approved by the FDA for infants under six months.
To Use
Use your fingers to scoop out some sunscreen from the tin and gently massage into your skin - including your face - about 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, after towel drying, or at least every 2 hours.
Because this biodegradable sunscreen has no synthetic stabilizers, the top layer may be a bit stiff the first time you use it (especially in cooler temperatures). That’s totally normal! Just use your fingers to apply a bit more pressure and dig into the top layer a bit. After that first use, the sunscreen should be soft and creamy and feel like a dream on your skin.
Packaging + End of Life
This ocean-friendly tinted sunscreen is packaged in an aluminum tin that’s encased in bamboo to provide extra insulation and maintain the sunscreen’s quality in all temperatures.
When you’ve used up all the sunscreen in the tin, the tin can easily be washed out and reused to hold any number of small things (maybe a travel container for some body lotion or toothpaste tablets!).
Or, if you prefer to recycle the tin and compost the bamboo, here’s how to separate the two for proper disposal:
- Use force on the container against a firm surface. Our vendor recommends chucking it at a wall to release anger and relieve stress 😉 If this is unsuccessful, grab a hammer or other tool to separate.
- Once separated, cut or break the bamboo into small pieces.
- Dispose of the aluminum with your other recyclables and put the bamboo pieces in a compost bin.
Note that there is a plastic “Drug Facts” label on the bottom of the canister that should be thrown away before composting the bamboo.

🌎 You care about the planet. So do we.
Look. I get it. It’s HARD to be an EcoWarrior. Someone who cares about the planet and wants the most sustainable products available - from the ingredients to the packaging to the way that product gets to your hands.
It seems like everywhere we turn, someone, somewhere, is greenwashing us.
But our superpower at A Drop in the Ocean is sorting through the BS, calling it out, and making sure our products are the absolute most sustainable and truly zero waste products we can find.
So on top of all the things we mentioned above about what makes our zero waste, reef-safe tinted sunscreen so sustainable, here’s a few other things you should know:
- We’re actually practicing what we preach behind the scenes. In 2022, we saved all of our trash for four months, and wrote a whole blog post on it. The tl;dr version is this: in four months, we only produced two pounds of trash. Everything from the packaging our products come in down to the Sharpie we use to write “Fragile” on your box is zero waste to its core.
- We’re an online-only zero waste store - which is highly intentional. It may seem counter-intuitive, but online shopping is actually more sustainable than in-person. I’m a data nerd at heart and I love diving into the research, and there are countless studies that have shown that online shopping is the most sustainable way to get your everyday essentials. Don’t believe me? Check out our whole blog post on the sustainability of online shopping.
- We ship ugly boxes. Your order from A Drop in the Ocean is not going to arrive in a pretty, branded box. It’s gonna show up in a reused tea box, or a donated Amazon box, or maybe even an inside-out Girl Scout Cookies box. All of our shipping materials are always 100% plastic-free and reused as much as possible, with curbside-recyclable paper tape and a post-consumer recycled paper shipping label. It won’t be pretty, but it will be zero waste.
Got more questions about our zero waste products or our practices behind the scenes? Just send us an email! I’m always happy to chat all things eco.
