You're a Decorator Crab!

aka the Frugal EcoWarrior

What's so cool about decorator crabs?

Oh-so-perfectly named, decorator crabs adorn themselves with algae and small animals like anemones and sea sponges to perfectly camouflage themselves with their environment. Their carapace, or upper shell, has Velcro-like hairs that allow the crab to attach these tiny animals and algae with ease.

If the crab stays within its neighborhood, it’ll keep the same decor on its shell, so it doesn’t have to keep finding new accessories. And when it comes time to molt, or shed its old shell to grow a new one, it’ll remove the anemones and other accessories and re-adorn them on its new shell.

What does a decorator crab have to do with your eco-superpower?

You, my friend, are ready to save the planet, but you’re not about to waste your hard-earned cash to do it.

Now you may be thinking to yourself, “But, Krystina, how is this a superpower? Saving the planet is expensive!”

But, you see, zero waste and sustainability is about so much more than reducing physical waste. Waste comes in so many different forms. Wasted time, wasted energy, wasted resources, and - you guessed it - wasted money.

You won’t be fooled into buying the next great “sustainable” thing on the market, just because Instagram tells you to.

We cannot consume our way into a sustainable future.

You know your dollars matter, and you want to spend them in the best ways that serve you and serve the planet. You’re ready for the sustainable swaps and sustainable actions that won’t break the bank - and won’t break after just a few uses, either.

Just like the decorator crab, you want solutions that will last a lifetime.

Your quiz results are designed to help you find clarity on your path to sustainability, while staying true to your values and your unique eco-superpower.

So if you’re ready to make waves for a sustainable future, let’s dive in.

We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in change.
Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”

Let's jumpstart your sustainable journey.

1. Reuse is queen.

Okay so we all know that reusing what we have is really the basis for a zero waste lifestyle, right? But for you, my Frugal EcoWarrior, this is where you really shine.

A matching collection of perfectly-curated mason jars? No thanks. You’ve got sauce jars of all sizes lining your pantry.

Brand new silicone bags? Nah, fam. You’re still rocking the Ziploc bags you bought six years ago and washing them as you go.

Zero waste has taken on a certain ~aesthetic~ in the days of Instagram, but you and I know that the ultimate zero waste move is reusing what you’ve got. So keep on rocking that reuse, my friend!

2. Let's get trashy.

No, not like that… Unless that’s your jam! Go get it 😉

What I’m talking about is getting real up close and personal with your trash. We can’t really reduce our waste if we don’t know what we’re wasting, now can we?

A personal waste audit is one of my favorite tools for jumpstarting or reigniting a zero waste journey. Check out my full how-to over on the blog, and because I never want to leave you hanging, there’s a free, downloadable template for you to use in there too.

But here’s why I love a waste audit for you, specifically.

Sometimes it’s easy to feel like we should try a certain sustainable swap. Maybe your BFF just got it and she’s sending you all the pics. Maybe you saw it on the ‘gram and thought, “Huh, that’s nifty. I could totally use that.” But what if it’s not actually a great fit for your life?

My best example of this is reusable beeswax wraps. We’ve got ‘em in the shop, I’ve got one in my fridge right now. They’re great.

BUT! If you don’t already use plastic wrap on the reg, you probably don’t need wax wraps, since they’re designed to be a replacement for plastic wrap. If you’re rocking that mason jar food storage life and haven’t touched plastic wrap in years, beeswax wraps may not be for you.

A waste audit smashes any shiny object syndrome you may have on your journey.

(Personally, I love to revisit the waste audit every year!)

3. Make your money work for you.

This one may seem a bit out of left field, but hear me out.

We’ve already established that you know your dollars matter, and you want to spend them in the best ways that serve you and serve the planet.

One of the most impactful ways we can do that - that isn’t talked about nearly enough - is using our dollars to invest in renewable energy and sustainable technologies.

Now to be clear, I am not a financial expert, but I do love the power that investing has - especially when we can get more money into the hands of women, people of color, and truly sustainable initiatives.

And it doesn’t have to be difficult. Or expensive.

Take a peek at our step-by-step guide to sustainable investing for the exact strategy I use for investing, that I started when I was just 22. It’s easy peasy, no nonsense, and no jargon.

Let’s get more money into the hands of the people that are going to change the world with it. (Looking at you, my EcoWarrior!)

Oh hey! I think an introduction may be in order. Don't you?

I'm Krystina, and I'm the face behind this space. I’m a zoo girl turned zero waste wannabe, a cat mom, a dance party junkie, and a pasta connoisseur.

I’m also a bit obsessed with all things sustainability - and never in a vague, one-size-fits-all solutions kind of way.

I believe that there is no black-and-white answer to sustainability, which means I’m always digging and researching and seeking out the best solutions for you, for me, and for now.

I founded A Drop in the Ocean back in 2019 when zero waste meant endless DIYs, grocery store bulk bins, and more reusable straws than one person would ever need.

But today, zero waste has become so much more, and I am so here for it.

As we get to know each other a bit more, you’ll discover my total disdain for greenwashing and my love affair with research, which means that in this space, you'll find everything to be carefully curated and approved by moi, with total transparency and a whole lotta love.

I’m so pumped you’re here, and I can’t wait to get to see all the good you do for the world.

xo,
Krystina

Ready to do this thing?

Okay so reusing what you’ve got is the ultimate zero waste move, right?

But what happens when we run out of toothpaste? Then what?

That’s where the fun begins! That’s when we get to start the exciting part of finding those new, sustainable, essentials that keep us clean and healthy.

But you’re not breaking the bank to make it happen. Nor should you!

So take a look around, stay a while, and let’s make waves, together.

This is just the beginning.

If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m never gonna leave you hanging. You’ll never be left thinking, “Okay, but now what?” with me. That I pinky promise you. I want you to have all of the tools and resources at your disposal to make you the most badass EcoWarrior you can be.
